Bridgerton

Welcome to Mayfair

Years after it first released on Netflix, I've finally started watching Bridgerton! Alicia started watching Season 3 last year, and I ended up watching it with her. She was kind enough to explain the characters, the history, and the relationships. I say kind enough, because I had several questions!

Based on a book series of the same name his is a show that takes place in a fictional version of Britain during the Regency Era. What is the Regency Era? A period between 1795-1837 when The Tyrant, King George the III, suffered a debilitating illness, and his son ran the empire. The series includes a multi-ethnic empire, with Queen Charlotte herself being of African descent.

The show follows the Bridgerton family. A group of eight siblings and their mother. Headed by the oldest son, the Viscount Anthony Bridgerton.

What is a viscount? A noble title, typically appointed by a king, who tended to work as an administrator. This title, apparently, is not typically inherited. As time went on, with the British tradition they eventually became inherited. In fact, it is the equivalent of a Count on the European Continent.

The plot lines all center around the quest to marry off all members of the family. Attending balls, political maneuvering, literal peacocking, gossip, and the search for true love are all aspects of courting.

What do I like about it? It's fun. It's low stakes. It's sexy. The costumes and set pieces are gorgeous. Life's been busy, and the US is a dumpster fire. So the comfort food that is Bridgerton is downright delightful.
