Taste of Tequila
Here's the story of the first time I tasted tequila. I was either a freshman or sophomore, probable freshman, at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Back then, I didn't drink much. Just wasn't something I did often. I lived in Schneider Hall, one of the two Brush Towers. A 17-story residence hall that housed around 600-700 students. Twice the since of my entire high school. I ended up getting involved with student government, and meeting many different people. Including a guy who worked the front desk.
One day, I walked inside my building and he asked if I wanted to try some tequila. I consider myself adventurous person, so I said yes. I had heard from friends how awful tequila was and proceeded with caution. I was a bout to drink the little shot he poured, when he stopped me. He said, "Don't shoot it, sip it. It isn't that kind of drink."
To this day, that was one of the best tequilas, I've ever had. It was smooth and easy drinking. It was the first time I experienced quality liquor. It taught me that there is a spectrum of quality. What I love about this experience, is that it didn't stop me from trying new things. Too many people I know had one bad experience with tequila, and swore it off. And that's a real shame.
These days I love tequila and mezcal. A mezcal old-fashioned hits just the right way. So thank you Schneider Hall front desk worker. You brought me flavor.
