The Five-Point Scale

The Five-Point Scale

I first created the 3-point scale to be a simple no-fuss method of rating things to based on it's own merits. Recently, a few friends and I have created the Whiskey Adventurers Guild (WAG). A group of like-minded people who enjoy whiskey and want to try more. At a meeting in March, I pitched the idea of using the 3-point scale to rate the different whiskeys we tried. The Guild felt that the 3-point system is limiting, and doesn't provide enough nuance. After many discussions and contemplation, I humbly present a NEW system, the 5-Point Scale.

The 5-Point Scale offers several improvements. Mostly around how you would purchase and consume the beverage.

As I go into how the scale works, I'll be using whiskey as example.

The 5-Point Scale

Rating Explanation
1 I wouldn't drink it, even if you bought it.
2 I would drink it was the only option.
3 I would buy and drink this.
4 I prefer to drink this.
5 I hoard this and guard access to it.

Diving deeper

1 Rating

This is something that I actively avoid as much as I can. I will never consume

In Whiskey Terms: I would not drink this whiskey under any circumstances.

2 Rating

This is something I probably have from some event we hosted, or it was a gift. I don't want to drink it, but it's there.

In Whiskey Terms: I would consume this drink if it was the ONLY option.

3 Rating

Always a safe and solid option. I will buy this for myself, but it's nothing overly impressive.

In Whiskey Terms: I do buy this, and it serves as the "well" option at my home. Examples include Bulleit, Old Grand-dad, Wild Turkey.

4 Rating

This is my premium option. It's a bit nicer, I probably save it for more special occasions or when I want to impress with a cocktail.

In Whiskey Terms: I do buy this, and it serves as a "premium" option at my home. Examples include Fancier Bulleit, Basil Hayden, Stateline Gin

5 Rating

This is one of the best liquors I've ever had the pleasure to consume. I'm buying and hiding it. I share it on the rarest of occasions.

In Whiskey Terms: This is a real treat. I love it, so I hide it away. Examples include Shieldaig 18, Stateline Distillery's Whiskey

Why?

I'm pleased with this. Hopefully my friends like it too. I'll find out soon. As I was writing this, I tapped into how I internally classify my drinks. It also made me realize I should have a special place to store my 5-rated beverages.
